DJIA Up 55 pts, Closes Above 21,000 Mark

U.S. stocks perked up, driven by a higher-than-expected April official employment figures and a less uncertain outcome of the French presidential election.

Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 55.47 pts, or 0.26%, at 21,006.94, the first time rising above the 21,000 mark since early March.

Standard & Poor’s 500 Index closed up 9.77 pts, or 0.41%, at 2,399.29.

Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 25.42pts, or 0.42%, at 6,100.76, posting a record high.

Sectors related to energy, telecom, and materials fared well. Among which, DuPont became the strongest blue chipper, up 2.98%. Verizon elevated 1.77%. Chevron increased 0.94%. On the other hand, financials and health-care stocks edged lower. Visa shed 0.57%. Johnson & Johnson dropped 0.35%. IBM slumped 2.5% as stock market wizard Warren Buffett sold one-third of his stake in the company.
